Ofsted Annual Report: EYFS does not prepare children for Year 1

The quality of early years provision is higher than it has ever been, with 94 percent of providers graded good or outstanding, due mostly to a rise in the proportion of providers graded as good. However, Ofsted’s annual report for 2016-17 says that there are weaknesses in the statutory framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage, which could be improved as a guide to children's learning in the Reception Year.

Early years settings to receive £50m to improve social mobility

The government has pledged to plough £50m into bolstering early years provision in disadvantaged areas, as part of an action plan to improve social mobility.

The investment is part of a £800m package of measures in its social mobility action plan, called Unlocking Talent, Fulfilling Potential, aimed at boosting the life chances of disadvantaged young people

Kids with ‘good reception teachers get better GCSEs’

RECEPTION classes in primary schools should be staffed by the best teachers because children taught well in their first year achieve better English and maths GCSEs, a study finds.

An effective start in school can boost development more than a decade later, a study of 40,000 pupils in England by Durham University has found.
